The Suba Green Forest Social Investment Initiative in Kenya (GFSI) is a program that consists of economic and social
investment projects implemented by Green Forest Social Investment Limited, its subsidiaries and Green Forest Social
Investment Trust (GFSIT).

The program is integrated to create synergy between economic and social investments.

The initiative has a long-term goal of providing equal economic opportunities for the social well being of children, youth and women and to invest in the natural environment in Gwassi Division, in Suba District.

It combines poverty reduction, environmental benefit and profit.

The Purpose of the program is to stimulate economic and social transformation of the people at the household level and beyond (communities at large). The company’s part of the program is for example active in forestry, and in the production of charcoal, honey and bio fuel, aloe and are run as social businesses.

1. Marketing & Sales Manager (Kenya)

Job profile:

The Marketing and Sales manager will set up the department that is responsible for the sales and marketing of several agriculture and forestry related products. He / she will head a small team that gets things done. The job requires both a hands-on mentality and an ability to think strategically about the positioning of the products in their respective markets.

The manager will work closely with the other managers of the program to ensure a marketing and sales approach that supports the production companies. He /She will be based at the company compound in Gwassi (Suba District) and
(maybe) partly in Kisumu.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Business Administration & Marketing Options

Role Summary:

  • To be responsible for developing and maintaining marketing strategies to meet agreed company objectives.
  • To evaluate customer research, market conditions, competitor data and implement marketing plan alterations as needed.
  • To oversees all marketing, advertising and promotional staff and activities.
  • Demonstrate technical marketing skills and company product knowledge.
  • Budget management. To deliver all marketing activity within the agreed budget.
  • To managing the entire product line life cycle from strategic planning to tactical activities.
  • To conduct market research in order to identify market requirements for current and future products.
  • To develop and implement a company wide plan to push product, working with all departments for its execution
  • To analyze potential strategic partner relationships for product lines.

2. Manager Support Services

Job profile:

The Manager Support Services will be responsible for various support service departments. The support services are provided to the companies and other entities within the GFSI (Green Forest Social Investment ltd. program). The support services have a diverse character, namely Accounting, HR, IT, Monitoring & Evaluation, Workshop/mechanics, Logistics and Maintenance.

He / she will head and manage a large team with a considerable number of direct reports. The job requires good managerial skills, ability to further build an organization that is service oriented, has high professional standards and provides guidance to other parts of the organization on how to work according to policies and procedures.

The manager will closely work together with the other managers of the program to ensure effective cooperation and coordination. Will be based at the company compound in Gwassi (Suba District, Kenya).

Role summary

The ideal candidate has a wide experience (10 years +) as an operational manager in shared services and / or support services in (some of) the above mentioned areas, is a people manager and can create support in the organization for change to further professionalize the support services. He / she is a team player, has seniority and has the ability to lead a large team. Guards and improves efficiency and performance.

Qualifications: Degree in Business Management or Equivalent.

3. Barn Manager

Job profile:

The cattle farmer / team leader will be responsible for the cattle and composting operation of one of the companies within the initiative. He / she will report to the (general) manager of the company and leads a small team to run the daily cattle and composting operation.

The candidate is responsible for complete cattle / dairy process from feeding, fattening to dairy operation and manages the composting activity. Knows how to set up a cattle operation in a professional manner and run it accordingly. Will be based at the company compound in Gwassi (Suba District, Kenya).

Qualifications

  • Degree / Diploma in veterinary or its equivalent.

Role Summary

  • Overall management and planning of the barn and compost shed.
  • Budgeting of the barn division according to the plan
  • Maintain and ensure safe facility environment including standards for maintenance and upkeep of unit’s equipment, sanitation, cash control, and employee hygiene.
  • Ensure maintenance of daily barn care, including but not limited to, organizing veterinarian schedules, ordering and maintaining feed and hay stock, maintaining and revising as necessary, the individual diets of each cattle, , and all other duties related to the health of the cattle and function and cleanliness of the barn.
  • Excellent interpersonal and other communications skills.
  • The ideal candidate should have a wide experience (7 years +) in the area of cattle farming with above mentioned aspects and should be able to lead a small team for the daily operation and also have the professional qualifications for the job. FAO National Consultant- Livestock Officer Job Vacancy

Position title: National Consultant- Livestock Officer    

Contract type: NPP

Duration: Initially for 12 months with a possibility of extension

Duty Station: Nairobi, Kenya with frequent travel in the FAO Project areas in Kenya

Under the technical supervision of the animal health service, AGAH, general supervision of the FAO Representative for Kenya and under the direct supervision of the Programme Coordinator (Livestock and Pastoralism) and in full collaboration with the National Crops Officer and all relevant partners, the livestock officer will:

Fulfil the Key responsibilities:

  • Be directly responsible for the management of the SIDA funded research project (OSRO/KEN/103/SWE)
  • Be directly responsible for the management of the OFDA funded emergency project (OSRO/KEN/104/USA)
  • Be directly responsible for the development and management of a CERF rapid response project which is currently in preparation.

Note: Management responsibility for the above projects includes the preparation of contracts and letters of agreement, monitoring progress against indicators, monitoring expenditure against each budget line, preparation and submission of timely reports

Key activities:

  • Supervise the implementation of field activities by the different partners for the above projects;
  • Provide animal health technical advice and support to the implementing partners in close collaboration with the department of Veterinary services;
  • Liaise with the FAO Kenya crops team in the management of the agriculture components of the SIDA and CERF projects
  • In collaboration with TCEO, assist and provide technical advice for the procurement of all required materials for the projects;
  • Liaise between the implementing partners and the relevant Livestock and Agriculture Departments to ensure harmonisation of activities;
  • Report on the progress of the projects at regular intervals and identify weaknesses that can be addressed;
  • Monitor the implementation of the projects in collaboration with the implementing partners;
  • Monitor project expenditure against each individual budget line;
  • Assist in internal evaluations of activities carried out under the respective projects;
  • Contribute to the draft of the mid-term and final reports on the process, including any lessons learned and recommendations for future activities;
  • Assist in the preparation of emergency-related livestock and agriculture project proposals
  • Perform other related duties and activities upon instructions received from the International Livestock officer or the FAO Representative.

Expected Outputs:

  • CERF Project concept/Proposal
  • well executed and reported livestock projects;
  • monitoring and evaluation reports;
  • mid-term and final project reports indicating lessons learnt and recommendations.

Qualification and experiences:

  • Veterinary degree or related MSc. degree in a relevant subject;
  • at least 7 years of relevant experience in the livestock field;
  • excellent understanding of pastoralist livelihood systems;
  • experience in coordinating a complex projects with many stakeholders;
  • excellent interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to bring diverse stakeholders together over a common goal;
  • proven report writing ability, and
  • excellent written and spoken English
  • Previous experience with CERF projects implementation is an added advantage
  • Computer literacy is essential

Remuneration will be based on the UNDP salary scale Service Band 4. This is dependent on level of experience.

Administration & Communications Officer
