About the organization

The African Forest Forum (AFF) is an association of individuals who share the pursuit and commitment to the sustainable management, use and conservation of the forest and tree resources of Africa for the betterment of the socio-economic wellbeing of its people and for the stability and improvement of its environment.

The purpose of AFF is to provide a platform and create an enabling environment for independent and objective analysis, advocacy and advice on all relevant policy and technical issues pertaining to achieving sustainable management, use and conservation of Africa’s forest and tree resources as part of efforts to reduce poverty, protect the environment and promote economic and social development.

About the position

The African Forest Forum is recruiting for the position of a Senior Programme Officer to be based at its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, or some other location, reporting directly to the Executive Secretary.

Duties and responsibilities

  • To coordinate and provide leadership in the development of priorities and implementation of activities on:
  1. Climate change as it relates to forest resources and livelihoods;
  2. The fuel-fibre-food nexus;
  3. Forest-water relations.
  • To articulate the interactions among the three items above.
  • To represent the AFF, on behalf of the Executive Secretary, on matters relating to the above duties, and on any other matters as directed by the Executive Secretary and the Governing Council of AFF.
  • To assist the Executive Secretary on any other duties and responsibilities (financial, administrative or technical) as may be directed.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in forestry, environment, natural resources management or related area.
  • Minimum of 10 years of post masters experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant post-PhD experience
  • Must have the capacity and demonstrated experience in leadership, management and forest science
  • Must  be a good team player
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Working knowledge of French or Portuguese will be an added advantage.

AWF currently seeks to hire a Heartland Ecologist to be based in its Kilimanjaro Heartland Offices in Namanga who will be responsible for all conservation science in the heartland.

Reporting to the Kilimanjaro Heartland Director with matrix reporting to the AWF Chief Scientist, the Heartland Ecologist will be incharge of design, data collection, collation, storage, analyses and dissemination of information in ecological
monitoring, integrated land-use zoning, climate change and applied species research and conservation in the Kilimanjaro Heartland.

S/he has an obligation to participate in fund-raising, policy, sharing knowledge about AWF work, managing program, partnerships, mentoring, monitoring and evaluation of ecological work embedded in the heartland.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for all priority ecological monitoring in the AWF Heartland.
  • Provide monthly briefings/ updates on species related activities.
  • Ensure ecological data and information feeds into the integrated land use zoning on the AWF Heartland.
  • Undertake species conservation action in the AWF Heartland.
  • Ensure climate change science integration into the Heartland program.
  • Represent AWF in strategic forums.

Qualifications

  • Postgraduate (MSc. or PhD degree) in relevant field.
  • At least 3 years post degree experience in the sector – any relevant area of ecology acceptable.
  • Direct experience of conservation or field ecological work in Africa.
  • Experience engaging partners and other stakeholder consultation in project development.
  • Experience working under organizational and site-level strategies as member of teams.
  • Demonstrable commitment to AWF mission and understanding of issues faced by AWF in delivering its mission.
  • Have verified record participating in design, managing resources and running a project.
  • Participant in several forums and published at least one peer-reviewed paper.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of ecological and human issues relevant to AWF’s Heartlands Program approach.
  • Has acceptable level of knowledge of local laws and regulations governing research and other ecological work in the country.
  • Be fluent in spoken and written English.

KFS EOI to Train Forest – Adjacent Community and Minority Groups on Ecotourism Development

Call for Expression of Interest to Train Forest-Adjacent Community and Minority Groups on Ecotourism Development

The Government of Finland (GoF )and the Government of Kenya (GoK) are executing the Implementation Phase of “Miti
Mingi Maisha Bora (MMMB) – Support to Forest Sector Reform” Programme.

The programme’s overall objective is “a reduction in poverty through ensuring that the forest sector contributes effectively and sustainably to improving the lives of the poor, restoring the environment and aiding the economic recovery and growth of Kenya within the context of Vision 2030”.

Under MMMB Programme, Kenya Forest Service (KFS) now invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) from qualified Non
Governmental Organizations (NGOs) or Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to carry out work as indicated below. The work
period is one (1) month (subject to extension).

MMMB intends to support selected forest-adjacent community and minority groups through out-sourcing arrangements to an NGO or CSO. The successful NGO/CSO will train representatives of community and minority groups to enable their groups to participate effectively in ecotourism activities both within and outside gazetted forests. The training shall cover issues of ecotourism product development, management, marketing, resource mobilization among others.

KFS now invites eligible and qualified NGOs and CSOs to express their interest to provide the above mentioned consultancy services. To be eligible, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

i. Provide statutory registration documents i.e. copies of PIN, VAT Reg., Cert. of Incorporation/Reg., tax clearance certificate, physical address and telephone contact.

ii. Demonstrate financial and organizational strengths by attaching audited accounts for the past three years.

iii. Provide a detailed organization profile.

Drylands Agroforestry Scientist

If devising and applying appropriate techniques and strategies for the use of innovative agroforestry practices in the dry land ecosystems of Eastern Africa including semi-arid integrated agricultural systems and woodland savannah grazing systems are your strengths then you are probably the person we are looking for!

Working from Nairobi in Kenya, you can guide our work in the following ways:

  • Identify researchable issues and generate testable hypotheses on better productivity of tree-based dry land agricultural and grazing production systems in the region.
  • In linkage with pilot development activities, describe and apply tools and strategies for measuring ecological intensification (especially crop/livestock/tree interactions) in dry lands, in order to promote maximum impact under a range of different production challenges.
  • Analyze test and refine strategies for scaling up of successful tree-based landscape regeneration and water management technologies.
  • Develop further work through writing/contributing to project proposals on dry lands agroforestry and climate smart agriculture in liaison with partnerships office, communication unit, the agroforestry policy initiative and the programmes development office.
  • In collaboration with other scientists within the dry lands community of practice, develop cutting edge technologies to raise agricultural production in the dry lands in accordance with changing climatic regimes.
  • Develop and nurture collaborations with national, regional and international research centres to facilitate collaborative studies and the dissemination of research findings within the CRP1.1 and CCAFS community of practice.
  • Collaborate with, and influence policy makers, extension programs, and other CGIAR centres (ICRADA, ILRI, ICRISAT etc) in the provision and exchange of suitably packaged information and technologies that advocate the use of best practices in water and soil management and agroforestry systems in low moisture farming systems.
  • Liaise with ICRAF staff and the community of practice within the Eastern Africa and other geographic regions especially Western and Southern Africa.

The successful applicant will have: Education, knowledge and experience

  • PhD in natural resources management field with experience in agroforestry, horticulture, landscape ecology, griculture or forestry with at least 5 years work (post PhD) in tropical countries, in field research, project development and/or landscape ecology.
  • Experience in collaborating with social scientists and policy/institution development specialists in the development of dry land ecological intensification strategies for livelihood improvement.
  • Experience in measuring the development impact of different livelihood intensification approaches.

Personal attributes and competencies

  • Strong communication skills, with a good publication record in scientific journals as well as in other media
  • Excellent verbal and written ability in English are essential, while the same in French are highly desirable
  • Proven abilities in fund raising and project management
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team in a  multicultural environment
  • Willingness to travel frequently on international work missions is essential

He / she will head and manage a large team with a considerable number of direct reports. The job requires good managerial skills, ability to further build an organization that is service oriented, has high professional standards and provides guidance to other parts of the organization on how to work according to policies and procedures.

The manager will closely work together with the other managers of the program to ensure effective cooperation and coordination. Will be based at the company compound in Gwassi (Suba District, Kenya).

The ideal candidate has a wide experience (10 years +) as an operational manager in shared services and / or support services in (some of) the above mentioned areas, is a people manager and can create support in the organization for change to further professionalize the support services. 3. Barn Manager

Job profile:

The cattle farmer / team leader will be responsible for the cattle and composting operation of one of the companies within the initiative. He / she will report to the (general) manager of the company and leads a small team to run the daily cattle and composting operation.

The candidate is responsible for complete cattle / dairy process from feeding, fattening to dairy operation and manages the composting activity. Knows how to set up a cattle operation in a professional manner and run it accordingly. Will be based at the company compound in Gwassi (Suba District, Kenya).

Role Summary

  • Overall management and planning of the barn and compost shed.
  • Budgeting of the barn division according to the plan
